Who took the first Selfie?

Lots of peoples believes that this is the first selfie. It is a sculpture of Bek the chief royal artist and his wife.

But it is not a selfie. A selfie is a photograph taken by ownself. When I am watching your selfie, I am not a third observer looking at you through someone else's eye. It's just me watching at you.
 However, we could define selfie in different forms as well.

First Wave Selfie

The unintentional, automatic or accidental resemblances of ownself like prehistoric human footprint.

Second Wave Selfie

The intentional depiction of ownself for example painting is second wave selfie.



Third Wave Selfie

Photographs are third wave selfie. At 1839, Robert Cornelius took his first self-portrait, which is considered as the world's first selfie. However, is not like modern day selfie.
Seventy years after in 1909, Joseph Byron took the first arm extended selfie.

Fourth Wave Selfie

In 1995, 19-year-old Hiromi Toshikawa (heromix) was nominated for new cosmos of photography award for submitting snapshots of her daily life. Her sudden fame among teenagers and educated elite made the practice a thing. Young peoples in Japan started to following this practice. She started the fourth wave selfie.


Why do peoples take selfie?

As Camera becoming smaller and easier to handle, peoples started taking photographs at any instants. Peoples always love looking at themselves. And it is becoming easier and easier to do so.  

Role of Social media

Social media boosted taking selfie as a social sharing activity.

Reverse Selfie

In 1969, Michael Collins took the first reverse selfie. A reverse selfie is a selfie in which every one is present except the person taking the selfie.

Who coined the term selfe?

The earliest uses of it was from sept-23, 2002 by Australian Nathan Hope. Hypocorism: cuter version of an existing word. It is a hypocorism of self-portrait.
